Mental health is more than just preventing mental disorders; it is the well-being of a person. It encompasses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health of an individual. This can also include a person’s spiritual health, as leaning into God and building a relationship with Jesus Christ can build resiliency. There are ways to improve mental health that require creating a few new habits.

Ways to Improve Mental Health in McKinney, Texas

You can improve your mental health with a few lifestyle changes. Consider using a technique known as habit stacking. Attach one of the ways to improve mental health to an established habit. For example, I will walk three miles every day after lunch. Lunch is the trigger, as you eat lunch at a set time daily. Walking to manage stress and improve physical health is the new habit.

The following are seven ways to improve mental health.

Manage stress and anxiety

Relaxation techniques can help manage stress and anxiety. Chronic stress can lead to burnout, high anxiety, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, panic attacks, and depression, as well as other physical conditions. Consider practicing deep breathing, stretching, yoga, or Tai-chi.

Eat better

Certain foods can exacerbate the symptoms of mental health conditions. Try to avoid sugary beverages, added sugars, caffeine, and ultra-processed foods. Lean toward healthier food options, such as whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats (like coconut or olive oil and nuts and seeds), and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Go to bed earlier

One of the most overlooked ways to improve mental health is to go to bed earlier. Many people stay up later to unwind, perhaps after their children have gone to bed. Although tempting, staying up too late cuts into good quality sleep.

Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep nightly. To make the transition easier, go to bed fifteen minutes earlier for a week. For example, go to bed at 10:45 p.m. instead of 11 p.m. for one week, then the following week go to bed at 10:30 p.m. for one week. Adjust as needed.

Aim to walk every day

Walking is more than just an exercise to improve physical fitness. Walking triggers the release of endorphins and hormones, such as serotonin and dopamine. These chemicals boost mood, relieve stress, manage pain, and improve cognitive function.

Walking 150 to 300 minutes weekly has been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps you manage stress better.

Find a new hobby or challenge

A new hobby or a challenge can focus your mind, lower stress, build confidence, and encourage socialization. Make a list of hobbies you have neglected, always wanted to try, or are a challenge. Check around in your community for lessons or research online.

Make time for you

Don’t get caught up in the busyness of life’s responsibilities that you neglect the activities that bring you pleasure. Make time for you. This could be a stop for an ice cream cone one evening after work or curling up with a good book on a Friday night.

Spend time with God

Building your spiritual life and deepening your relationship with Jesus Christ can offload the burden of worries and fear of the unknown. Knowing that God is for you and with you in all circumstances can get you through any of life’s obstacles with a peace that passes all understanding.
