The signs of autism are often talked about in regards to children. However, many adults have never been diagnosed. Some experts believe that for every three diagnosed cases of autism in adults, two cases remain undiagnosed.

Understanding the signs of autism in adults can bring awareness to the condition and help those struggling.

The Signs of Autism in Adults

The signs of autism in adults are varied, and no individual will display every sign. Autism in adults may also be more complicated to diagnose, as they have years to learn how to mask the signs and create their own coping mechanisms.

Regimented Routines

One of the signs of autism in adults is following regimented routines or rituals. They may become insistent that procedures must be followed in a specific way, causing issues with family members, friends, and coworkers. They may take on an “I have to do everything myself to get it done right” attitude as a mask.

Focused on Hobbies, Interests, or New Projects

Hyperfocusing on hobbies, interests, or new projects to the detriment of their own health or responsibilities can be another one of the signs of autism in adults. They may brandish it as being obsessed with a hobby as they lose track of time and isolate themselves from others.

Repetitive Movements

Repeating a movement can bring someone with autism comfort. It can help them focus on a specific task or shut down the overstimulation. For example, some adults with autism rock back and forth while working, watching a tense scene in a movie, or listening to a public speaker. They need the movement to either bring calmness or help them focus on the message being spoken.

Oversensitivity to Sights, Sounds, and Smells

Children with autism are not the only ones overstimulated by sights, sounds, and smells. Adults with autism can only take in and process so much before they need a moment. They may walk out of an event, stay a short time, or avoid areas where there is too much happening all around them.

Disgusted By the Texture of Certain Foods

If you were described as a picky eater as a child, you may want to question a mental health professional about the signs of autism. Being disgusted by textures in both food, clothing, bedding, and other items can be a sign. You may find yourself avoiding specific foods because they look or feel strange.

Trouble Regulating Emotions

Trouble regulating emotions can lead to outbursts or periods of silence. People may describe you as emotionally distant. Maybe you have difficulty understanding social cues, like sarcasm, humor, and empathy. This can cause problems in relationships, friendships, and parenting.

Difficulty with Speech and Communication

Not understanding speech, not being able to articulate thoughts, and avoiding eye contact are all signs of autism. Sometimes, the brain cannot process the words quickly enough, or you feel the need to shut down due to too much stimulation.
